Kitchenwares bringing pain to the table.
A review of Carrot peeler knife by CygnusDarius
Introduction
I thought this was a silly submission...before I read its content. This is a prime example of how to draw details around a non-descript item and make it special.
Cons
There are some misspelled words. For example, "mistery" is normally "mystery" (unless the author was making an allusion I couldn't relate to).
Tacking on that Knock spell at the end is distracting and superfluous. I don't understand how through the backstory it relates at all. Either change the bonus spell to something more directly linked to the item's legend or explain the connection better.
Pros
Great descriptive text. I can tell this was an item that resulted from an actual game...and if not, even better.
A good means of introducing leveling weapons to a group. It's a great idea to have an item developing magic characteristics through use and not strictly by way of a "crazy mage with a phobia" or an "anonymous paranoid lich-lord".
It is really functioning as a means of producing roleplay...and the author made that clear through the text. It is a legendary item that is common knowledge. It's a paring knife from a kitchen. Of course every green wet-eared rogue is going to pretend to have it. Just wonderful, the whole package.
Conclusion
Needs some mild tinkering to fix a few bugs...and well worth the effort to fix them. This could easily be polished and finished into an item, a campaign, a houserule, and a resourceful prestige class of former kitchen workers. Good stuff...just needs a once over.
