Compound Bow (Large; Martial)
"The gnome tinkerers have added strange wheels to our bows, Sir. They call them cams. They say with these cams, it will be easier to pull and aim our bows with less effort, Sir" said Sebastian to his sergeant when asked about his strange looking bow.
Compound bows are made from laminated horn, wood, or bone. These bows are built with a recurve unlike normal bows, which is made in three pieces that interlock to make the recurve. Also this bow makes use of metal cams at each end of the bow. The string is made of silk, and woven in a pattern through the cams. This combination of design produces power in every shot with very little effort.
Gnomes have been known to craft these bows and they sell them at open markets. They will also very rarely sell blueprints on how to make such bows (Diplomacy check of 25 to talk them into selling it). If they are willing to sell you a blueprint, the prices usually are 40-50 gp.
To craft a compound bow you will need:
- A gnome blueprint of the compound bow (see above)
- At least a Knowledge (engineering) rank of 3+
- Pass a 22 DC Craft (bow making)
check.
You need at least two hands to use a bow, regardless of its size. You can use a compound bow while mounted. To wield and use a compound bow, the wielder needs Str 10+ and Dex 13+. If you have a bonus for a high Strength, apply it to the damage (up to a maximum +5). If the wielder has access to the Point Blank Shot feat and has a Dex of 15+, and is shooting at targets within 30 ft., he gains the following:
- The critical threat range and multiplier of the bow changes to 19-20/x2.
- If the wielder has access to the Improved Critical (compound bow) feat, the threat range and multiplier instead change to 18-20/x2.
This improvement implies the ease of pulling back the bow string and aiming the compound bow at targets shorter distances away.
